Which outlook would you prefer? The Hudson river? Or perhaps a view over Manhattan? The Standard, opened in 2009, offers a grandiose view of New York from each and every bed. The company, known for new hotel concepts in Los Angeles, also strikes success in the meatpacking district, once again proving it knows how to make the most out of a good location. Seemingly endless jogging and walking paths on former railway lines stretch out across the city from beneath the hotel, ideal for the daily dose of exercise. After your morning run, the hotel is a convenient stone’s throw away from great galleries and shops, and in the evening some of the best restaurants lie in wait a short walk away. The Standard’s interior design is modern and consciously forgoes glamorous excess. Happily, this does not mean an absence of novel ideas, for example bathrooms realised in the form of a giant shower. Such imaginative concepts are convincingly brought off.
